Nevada Woman Sentenced for Role in India-based IRS Impersonation Scam

On March 18, 2024, in the District of Nevada, Ladda Boonlert was sentenced to 30 months imprisonment, 1 year of supervised release, and ordered to pay $2,057,465.39 in restitution. Boonlert pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, for her role in a scheme involving the impersonation of Internal Revenue Service (IRS) employees.  According to court documents, from January 2015 through September 2017, Boonlert conspired with individuals located in India and the United States, to obtain money from victims under false or fraudulent pretenses. The scheme involved various scammers, primarily in India, who called victims posing as IRS officials and claiming the victims owed back taxes. The scammers threatened victims with arrest if they did not make immediate payments. Boonlert acted as a runner for the scheme, picking up victim payments from MoneyGram, Target, and other businesses, knowing that these proceeds were the product of a fraudulent scheme. She admitted to acting as a leader in the conspiracy, recruiting at least 10 additional runners, and directing others to recruit more. Because of the scheme, over 2,700 victims made more than $2.4 million in payments to Boonlert’s coconspirators.
