IRS Employee Sentenced for Theft of Government Funds

On September 29, 2020, in the Western District of Missouri, Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Data Transcriber Tamara Miller was sentenced for theft of Government funds. Miller pled guilty to the offense on January 23, 2020.

According to the court documents, between approximately January 1, 2017 to about March 31, 2018, Miller devised a scheme to defraud the IRS and taxpayers who filed paper IRS Form 1040, U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, that requested refund payments by U.S. Treasury checks. Miller used taxpayers' names and Social Security Numbers to apply for accounts at online banks. Upon successfully opening fraudulent bank accounts in the taxpayers' name, Miller would enter the routing and account numbers in the refund section of the Forms 1040, thereby falsely representing that the taxpayer elected to have the refund deposited into the fraudulent account instead of receiving a check. In total, Miller stole $5,214 dollars in taxpayer's refund payments.

Miller was sentenced to two years and two months' imprisonment for theft of Government funds; three years' supervised release; ordered to pay restitution of $5,214, and a $200 special assessment fee.
